ROUNDUP : Pierce Hammers Glendale, 25-1, Behind 27-Hit Attack

Pierce College pounded four Glendale pitchers for 27 hits, including seven doubles and two home runs, to post a 25-1 Western State Conference baseball win at Pierce on Thursday.

Erik Martinez, Joey Arnold, and Paul Geller each had four hits for Pierce (16-2, 8-1 in conference play), which led, 9-0, after three innings. Brian Smith and Robby Welles each added three hits.

Welles hit his ninth home run, a three-run shot in the sixth inning. Arnold added a two-run homer in the fifth and Josh Smaler doubled twice.

Pierce’s outburst made a winner of Eric Raba (5-0), who struck out 11 and scattered four hits in seven innings.

In other college baseball games:

Santa Barbara 3, Ventura 2--Visiting Ventura (14-5, 7-2) fell for the second time this week in WSC play.

Former Notre Dame High standout Chris Prince doubled in two runs in the second to give Santa Barbara a 3-0 lead. Kasha Clemons, David Frazier and Ryan McMullen each had two hits for Ventura.

Moorpark 4, Santa Monica 1--Jeff Sommer broke a 1-1 tie in the third with a two-run single and Jason Mitchell went the distance for host Moorpark (10-7, 4-5) in a WSC game.

Bakersfield 3, Canyons 1--Tim Teeters’ bases-loaded single with one out in the seventh drove in the winning run for host Bakersfield in a WSC game. Sean Henson struck out six in 6 1/3 innings and Walter White had two hits for Canyons (9-12, 6-4).

Cuesta 9, Oxnard 8--A one-out suicide squeeze in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted Cuesta over Oxnard (2-14, 2-7). Oxnard blew an 8-6 lead in the eighth inning of the WSC game.

East L.A. 11, Mission 6--Marlon McKinney had three hits, scored a run and drove in another for visiting Mission, whose three-game winning streak was snapped.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

Granada Hills 12, Thousand Oaks 5--Mike Cuthbert allowed two hits and two runs in 4 1/3 innings and was two for two at the plate as host Granada Hills won the San Fernando tournament title with a 5-0 record.

Rob Weinzimer had two hits and two RBIs and Sam Voita was two for three for Granada Hills. Jamal Nichols homered for Thousand Oaks (0-5).

San Fernando 5, Monroe 1--Jorge Gonzales pitched a four-hitter in a San Fernando tournament game.

El Camino Real 6, Grant 1--Dan Cey and Mike McLean each homered to lead El Camino Real (4-1) in a San Fernando tournament game at Grant.

Cleveland 3, Franklin 0--Willie Morales and Rob Rundquist combined on a two-hitter and Dave Cipolla capped a two-run first with a run-scoring triple for host Cleveland (4-0-1) in a San Fernando tournament game.

Kennedy 6, Birmingham 2--Billy Ramirez was three for four with three RBIs to lead the Golden Cougars (4-1) in a San Fernando tournament game.

Poly 11, Narbonne 2--Jesus Perez, Frankie Medina and Orlando Chavarria each had two hits and Francisco Flores hit a solo home run as Poly (3-2) won a San Fernando tournament game.

Chatsworth 5, Sylmar 3--Mark Lopez and Eddie Ramos each had two hits for Chatsworth (3-4) in the second round of the University tournament at Chatsworth.

Alemany 8, Whittier 8--Chris Gallagher’s single with two out in the seventh capped a four-run inning and forged a tie for host Alemany in a nonleague game called after seven innings because of darkness.

Highland 11, Harvard-Westlake 4--Jeff Tepper’s grand slam capped a six-run fifth inning for visiting Highland (2-4) in a championship semifinal of the L. A. Baptist tournament.

BOYS’ TRACK

Quartz Hill 70, Canyon 66--Ramon Banks and Dan Prince each won two events and contributed legs to a victorious 400-meter relay team for host Quartz Hill in the Golden League opener.

Banks won the 400 in 49.3 seconds and the 200 in 23.6. Prince had marks of 11.4 in the 100 and 43 feet in the triple jump.

GIRLS’ TRACK

Thousand Oaks 65, Newbury Park 48, Channel Islands 46--Marion Jones made her outdoor debut for host Thousand Oaks by winning the 220- and 440-yard dashes, and anchoring the victorious 440- and mile-relay teams. Jones timed 24.5 seconds in the 220 and 58.5 in the 440.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Santa Barbara City 7, Pierce 2--Mai-Chi Tieu of Pierce, the No. 2-ranked junior college singles player in the state, defeated Mo Patton, the fourth-ranked player, 6-3, 6-1, but Santa Barbara dominated the rest of the WSC match at Santa Barbara. Pierce is 4-5, 2-5; Santa Barbara is 7-0 in WSC play.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Taft 6, University 1--Taft (3-0) swept four singles matches in a nonleague matchup of teams expected to battle for the City Section 4-A Division title this season.

University is 2-1.

Quartz Hill 18, Antelope Valley 0--Three singles players combined to win nine sets without losing a game for host Quartz Hill (7-0, 3-0), in a Golden League match. The Rebels, ranked No. 2 in the Southern Section 2-A Division, outscored Antelope Valley, 108-6, in games.

HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL

Saugus 2, Irvine 1--Christine Chelender scored on a one-out error in the bottom of the seventh to give host Saugus (11-1) the Laguna Hills tournament title. Kerry Coudry (7-1), the tournament’s most valuable defensive player, struck out six and limited Irvine to four hits.

Thousand Oaks 1, Agoura 0 (11 innings)--Amy Ecklund, who reached base on an error, scored from third with the winning run in a Marmonte League opener.

COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL

Cal State Northridge d. Brigham Young, 11-15, 14-16, 15-12, 15-10, 17-16--Coley Kyman had 32 kills and Axel Hagar had 29 kills and a team-high 19 digs as Northridge (13-6, 7-2) won a Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. match at Brigham Young.
