Caltrans Funds 3 South Bay Highway Projects

The California Transportation Commission on Friday approved funding for three South Bay highway projects, including a new interchange off the San Diego Freeway at Los Angeles International Airport and an extension of Del Amo Boulevard in Carson over the same freeway.

Funding for the projects was included in a $256.8-million package approved for 1997 and 1998, a spokeswoman for the commission said. Construction dates and expected completion times were not detailed.

The largest South Bay project will be a $20.7-million southbound off-ramp from the San Diego Freeway onto Arbor Vitae Avenue. The project will allow drivers direct access to the airport’s remote parking lots C and D, spokeswoman Roberta Tinajero said.

Also included in the funding package was $10.2 million for a four-lane crossing of Del Amo Boulevard over the San Diego Freeway. Currently, Del Amo dead-ends on both sides of the freeway. Transportation planners think that the new crossing will ease severe congestion on parallel roads through the South Bay.

In addition, $700,000 was set aside to rebuild a railroad bridge over Aviation and Rosecrans boulevards, allowing both streets to be widened and easing what experts say is one of the most congested intersections in the county.
