Newport Harbor’s volleyball team is awaiting a ruling by the Southern Section on the eligibility of Tanoa Weygand, a transfer student from Hawaii.

Stan Thomas, section commissioner, said he expects to make a ruling on Weygand later this week.

Thomas has received the paperwork for Weygand’s appeal to play his senior season at Newport Harbor, but he hasn’t had a chance to review it.

Weygand, a 5-foot-9 outside hitter with outstanding power and leaping ability, played his senior season in Hawaii last fall. The Hawaii boys’ volleyball season is in the fall, California’s is in the spring.

Weygand grew up in Newport Beach and attended Ensign Junior High through eighth grade, but moved to Hawaii before his freshman year. He moved back to Newport Beach midway through his senior year and enrolled for the spring semester at Newport Harbor, Sailor Coach Dan Glenn said.

“He moved back here in the middle of the year and wanted to play,” Glenn said. “He has done all of this himself. I’m not involved.

“Tanoa went over to Hawaii last week and got all the paperwork done and gave it to (Principal Dennis) Evans, who gave it to the Southern Section.”

The Sailors also are without leading hitter Beau Sheward, a third-team All-Southern Section pick last season who was ruled academically ineligible. Sheward could become eligible in mid-April if he improves his grades.

Six Orange County girls’ players have been named to Volleyball Monthly’s “Fabulous 50” high school team: Ally Carpenter (Capistrano Valley), Christine Garner (Tustin), Marni Hichborn (El Modena), Kelly Kuebler (Los Alamitos), Maureen McLaren (Newport Harbor) and Shannon Meixsell (Dana Hills).

The county’s all-star volleyball matches will be June 5 at Golden West College. The girls’ match will start at 6 p.m. and the boys’ at 7:30. Both matches will be best-of-three games. Coaches and team rosters will be announced at a later date.
