COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Cal Lutheran Win Streak Reaches 20

Share

The Cal Lutheran baseball team rolled to its 20th win in as many games with a 4-1 victory over Wisconsin Whitewater on Wednesday in the opening round of the UC San Diego Sunshine Classic.

This one--like most of Cal Lutheran’s wins this season--was easy. Junior left-hander Pat Norville pitched 7 2/3 hitless innings and gave up only two hits in 8 2/3 innings before giving way to Louis Birdt.

Norville (6-0) struck out five and walked one.

Birdt recorded the final out after Wisconsin Whitewater (1-1) scored a run in the ninth.

And while the Kingsmen’s winning streak continues to build, it has become a taboo subject among the players.

“We haven’t talked about the streak even once,” Coach Rich Hill said, “because the minute we start thinking we can’t be beat, that’s exactly when we will get beat.”

Norville’s performance overshadowed an impressive complete game by Wisconsin Whitewater’s Kirk Hanson (0-1), who struck out 13 and scattered eight hits.

Cal Lutheran scored three runs in the second inning. Bob Farber doubled to drive in Darrell McMillin, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Dan Smith. Jason Wilcox’s two-out bunt single drove in Rawley Jacobson from third.

The Kingsmen added a run in the fourth on a two-out, run-scoring single by Wilcox. Wilcox and Jacobson each were two for four.

Mt. San Antonio 5, Ventura 4--Three of Mt. San Antonio’s six hits came in a three-run seventh in a nonconference win at home. Mitch King was two for four for Ventura (15-6).

With the Matadors trailing, 2-1, Northridge’s Denise Swank ripped a three-run double to give the Matadors a 4-2 lead in the sixth inning. Sophomore Beth Calcante followed with a two-run homer over the left-center-field fence. It was Calcante’s seventh homer, the 10th of her career.

Sophomore Jen Fleming went two for three with a double and scored the only run in the first game.

Freshman right-hander Kathy Blake (15-3) picked up both victories. She threw a two-hit shutout in the first game and pitched the final two innings in relief in the second.

Tamara Ivie had two hits in the second game.
