Glendale Duo to Run for Adams State

Glendale College distance runners Oved Aguirre and Oscar Perez have made an oral commitment to attend Adams State (Colo.) College in the fall.

Aguirre placed third in the 5,000 meters in the state junior college track championships last year, and Perez finished fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

They have lowered their personal bests in those events this season; Aguirre has run 14 minutes 31.01 seconds in the 5,000, and Perez has timed 9:24.01 in the steeplechase.

Aguirre and Perez were the Nos. 3 and 4 runners on the Vaquero cross-country team that placed fourth in the 1991 state championships.

Adams State, an NAIA Division I school, placed second in the past two NAIA men’s cross-country championships.

American Legion District 16 is formulating baseball teams for the summer season.

District 16 last year consisted of teams from Ventura County and Santa Barbara. District member Conejo A of Thousand Oaks won the Area 6 title and advanced to the state tournament in Yountville.

Five gymnasts from the Van Nuys-based Gymnastic Olympica club will compete April 11 in the U.S. Gymnastics Federation Region I championships in Carson. The gymnasts qualified on the basis of their all-around scores in the Southern California championships in Santa Barbara on March 21.

In the junior division (under 15), Jenny Kang (35.45) placed eighth and Kim Becker (34.1) finished 22nd.

In the senior division, Michelle Lotta scored a 34.65 for 17th place and Charisse Phillips scored a 36.55 for fourth place.

Christina Nishimoto did not compete because of an injury but had already qualified for regionals. Regionals are the qualifying meets for the USGF nationals in Baton Rouge, La., May 8-9.

Jennifer Parmenter set a national record in the 10-and-under age-group division of the 50-yard backstroke when she finished in 29.59 seconds in the Southern California Junior Olympics on March 24 in Barstow.

Parmenter, who lives in Granada Hills and attends Valley Presbyterian Elementary School, broke the record set in 1988 by 0.34.

The Northridge Knights, a rugby team composed of quadriplegics from Northridge Hospital Medical Center, will compete in the national championships today through Sunday at San Jose State.

The Knights, who compiled a 9-2 record during the season, will be one of 31 quadriplegic teams competing.
