COLLEGE ROUNDUP : CSUN Wins 2 Extra-Inning Games

Winning is fast becoming a habit for the streaking Cal State Northridge softball team.

The 20th-ranked Matadors swept 17th-ranked Cal State Sacramento, 2-0 and 7-5, in a nonconference doubleheader Saturday to extend their winning streak to 13 games.

Both games went into extra innings.

In the first game, Tamara Ivie drove in Amy Colton and Jen Fleming (two for four) in the eighth inning for the only runs.

Freshman right-hander Kathy Blake (18-3) scattered six hits in recording her ninth consecutive victory.

Trailing, 4-2, in the seventh inning of the second game, Northridge (34-17-1) rallied for three runs. But Sacramento (26-15) tied the score, 5-5, with a run in the bottom of the inning.

It stayed that way until Denise Swank tripled to drive in Missy Cress with two out in the ninth. Michelle McDonald (three for five) followed with a run-scoring single.

BASEBALL

Pierce 3, Santa Barbara 0--Eric Raba scattered nine hits to lead the host Brahmas to a Western State Conference victory.

Ricky Banuelos was two for four and drove in all three runs for Pierce (21-3-1, 13-2 in WSC play).

Santa Barbara fell to 10-12-1, 6-8-1.

Canyons 9, Moorpark 7--The host Cougars scored five runs in the eighth inning on four hits and a walk for a come-from-behind WSC win.

After Walter White’s two-run single tied the score, 7-7, Pat DeBoer doubled to drive in White. Kirk Fellows followed with a single that knocked in DeBoer.

Fellows, Bobby Corrales, Danny Gray and Ty Powell each had two hits for the Cougars (13-13, 10-5).

Valley 6, Glendale 3--Jake Loveridge pitched four hitless innings in relief to pace Valley to a WSC victory at Glendale.

Arnold Settles had three hits, drove in one run and scored another for Valley (13-14-1, 8-6-1).

Carlos Olmos had two hits and two runs batted in.

Starter Arnie Aguinaga (1-2) allowed three runs on six hits through the first five innings before Loveridge came on to earn his first save.

Santa Monica 4, Ventura 0--The host Pirates stranded 10 runners in a WSC loss.

Carlos Rios and Mitch King each had two hits for the Pirates (18-7, 11-3), who fell one game behind Pierce in the conference standings in the loss column.

Santa Monica is 11-14, 4-11.
