PADRES UPDATE : NOTEBOOK / SCOTT MILLER : Maddux Encouraged by Workout, Likely to Be Activated Monday

Mike Maddux threw 36 pitches worth of batting practice Friday but was left on the disabled list. The Padres want to see how he feels today and then, according to pitching coach Mike Roarke, probably will activate him on Monday.

“We wouldn’t want to bring him back on one day’s rest,” Roarke said.

Maddux, who has been out with tenderness in his right elbow, said he felt good and was encouraged because, for the first time, he threw all four of his pitches. When he pitched batting practice on Tuesday, he didn’t use his cut fastball.

“It went well today,” Maddux said. “Give me a day off and I should be ready.”

Manager Greg Riddoch, meanwhile, said Dave Eiland will make his next start as scheduled on Monday against Philadelphia. Eiland left Tuesday’s game in the second inning with back spasms.

The Boo Benito Santiago Campaign is going national. Padre pitcher Randy Myers appeared on The Dennis Miller Show on Thursday night, and Miller asked Myers how the Padres are going to do this season.

Before Myers could answer, Miller then asked: “When is Benito going to get his head in the game?”

Myers gave what has become the Padre stock answer: That Santiago’s pitch-calling has really improved and that he is doing a good job in every area except hitting.

Something strange must be in the air around the Padre offices because, all of a sudden, KC and the Sunshine Band songs are popping up during batting practice.

We kid you not.

“I’m Your Boogie Man” was played over the loudspeakers while the Padres were hitting, and then in the Padre clubhouse right after batting practice, Maddux was singing “That’s the Way (I Like It).”

Asked about this disturbing trend, Maddux replied: “Maybe Larry Andersen requested stuff from his rookie year.”

Cincinnati’s injury woes continue: Manager Lou Piniella said outfielder Glenn Braggs will probably be placed on the 15-day disabled list today, retroactive to Monday. Braggs suffered a mild separation of the left shoulder when he ran into an outfield wall Sunday in San Francisco. . . . The Padres observed a moment of silence before Friday’s game in respect for Deron Johnson, who passed away Thursday after a battle with cancer. . . . Sunday’s game with Cincinnati is the last of 19 in a row for the Padres against Western Division teams. Starting with Philadelphia on Monday, the Padres will play 34 in a row against Eastern Division teams.
