ROUNDUP : Vines Runs 11.68 in 100 to Record Personal Best

Charlotte Vines of Cal State Northridge ran a personal best of 11.68 seconds in the 100-meter dash to highlight performances by a small contingent of Matador women in the UC Irvine Invitational on Saturday.

Vines, a junior from San Marcos High, finished third in the invitational section of the 100 behind three-time Olympian Alice Brown of the Southern California Cheetahs (11.61) and Michelle Carroll of Ireland (11.65).

Vines later finished second in her heat of the 200 meters in 24.53.

Vines’ time in the 100 moved her to sixth on the all-time Northridge performer list. Brown, the 1984 Olympic silver medalist in the 100, set the Northridge record of 11.27 in 1980.

CSUN’s Tanya Lynch also recorded a personal best, finishing second in the invitational triple jump with a leap of 40 feet 0 3/4 inch.

HIGH SCHOOL TRACK

Citrus Valley Relays--Maribella Aparicio of host Fillmore handed teammate Nikki Shaw a rare defeat in the mile, timing 5:05.1 to Shaw’s 5:13.9.

Fillmore’s Joel Lopez won the boys’ mile in a personal best of 4:26.1.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Moorpark 11, Valley 3--The Raiders (20-15, 11-9) scored six runs on six hits in the eighth to pull away from visiting Valley and earn the final berth in the Western State Conference’s postseason tournament.

Moorpark will play at Ventura, the conference runner-up, on Tuesday in its tournament opener.

Tom Lunsford hit a two-run home run in the fifth to give Moorpark a 4-2 lead. It was Lunsford’s school-record eighth home run of the season. Mike Saurez hit seven in 1990.

Daryl Hernandez went three for five, and Bill Hall, Jeff Sommer and Mike Keegan each had two hits for Moorpark.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

Crespi 0-11, Loyola 1-3--Dustin Engels, aboard on a fielder’s choice, scored on Jarrid Eastwood’s single in the second inning to give the host Cubs a nonleague win in the first game.

The Celts loaded the bases with no outs in the first inning but failed to score against Loyola’s Eric Ortiz (5-2). Jeff Suppan (4-2) went the distance for the Celts, striking out eight and yielding four singles.

In the second game, Dan Arnold and Joe Ruggiero each scored three runs and Victor Seper went three for four with a run batted in to pace Crespi (13-5).

L. A. Baptist 12, Western Christian 7--Brad Imbler collected four hits, stole three bases, scored three runs and knocked in another to lead the Knights (9-8, 2-3) to an Alpha League win at Royal Oak Intermediate School.

Bishop Amat 7-30, Chaminade 3-9--Bishop Amat punished Chaminade pitchers for 38 hits in a nonleague doubleheader in La Puente.

Bishop Amat (14-3) collected 26 hits off six pitchers in the second game and scored 12 runs in the first inning alone in extending Chaminade’s losing streak to 16 games.

Chaminade (3-17) was led by Ted Corcoran, who went a combined four for seven with five RBIs.

HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL

Thousand Oaks tournament--Thousand Oaks, Camarillo, Hart and St. Paul each won twice to advance to the semifinals of the 16-team tournament.

Carrie Russell pitched consecutive shutouts for Thousand Oaks (11-4), which beat Santa Barbara, 3-0, and Alemany, 2-0. She struck out six against Santa Barbara and nine against Alemany.

In this Saturday’s semifinals, Thousand Oaks will play St. Paul, which defeated Rio Mesa, 10-0, and Righetti, 13-0.

Hart (11-4) defeated Newbury Park, 2-0, and Buena, 8-0, behind the pitching of Lauren Fenstemaker (9-2), who won both games.

Hart next will play Camarillo, which defeated the Thousand Oaks junior varsity and Millikan by 1-0 scores.

In Hart’s victory over Newbury Park, Lisa Kelley scored on a passed ball in the first and Kim Neighbors’ single drove in Jamie Dean in the third. Against Buena, Danielle Bragdon’s two-run triple keyed a five-run Hart third.

Hoover 2, Pasadena Poly 0 (10 innings)--Nancy Evans allowed two hits and struck out 20 as Hoover (15-2) won the championship of the Carpinteria tournament. Claudia Hernandez’s squeeze bunt and Alex Cao’s fielder’s choice scored the runs.
