School: Capistrano Valley High

Sport: Swimming

Class: Senior

When she was a freshman, Jacob finished sixth in the Southern Section Division 4-A 500-yard freestyle but the next two seasons she skipped high school swimming to concentrate on training for the Olympics. Early last month, she narrowly missed making the 1992 U.S. Olympic team in the 200 free and now she rediscovering the joys of interscholastic competition. “She’s still pointing toward the long course nationals in August but I want her to have some fun also,” Capistrano Valley Coach Bob Skelley said. The middle-distances are Jacob’s specialty, but she switched to the sprints for the Foothill Swim Games Saturday and was named the girls’ swimmer of the meet. She set a meet record in the 100 free, finishing in 51.89 seconds to defeat defending Southern Section 4-A champion Michelle Perry of El Toro. Jacob also won the 50 free in 24.49, the third fastest time in the Southern Section this season. Her 100 time is the best in the section this season and she also has the fastest times in the 200 and 500 frees. “If she ever learned how to sprint she would go extremely fast,” Skelley said. “She’s not a sprinter but she puts on a good imitation of one.”

Other top performers:

Ali Ladeda, a Capistrano Valley Christian swimmer who won the 200 free (1:54.58) and the 200 individual medley (2:10.78) at the Mission Viejo Invitational.

Danielle Rodriguez, who pitched Fountain Valley to 1-0 extra-inning, shut-out victories over Ocean View and Marina. Rodriquez drove in the winning run in the 10th inning of the Ocean View game. The Marina game went eight innings.
