Joey Arnold, a sophomore outfielder from Pierce College, has signed a letter of intent with Cal State Northridge.

Arnold, who played at Reseda High, helped lead the Brahmas to the Western State Conference title. He will join another junior college standout, Keven Kempton of East L.A., at Northridge. Kempton, a right-handed pitcher, played at El Monte High and reportedly was being recruited by Chapman, USC, Utah and Texas A & M.

Northridge lost a recruit in men’s basketball, however. Todd Loewe of Woodbridge High in Orange County had offered an oral commitment to Northridge, but said this week that he will instead attend the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Del Marine, a sophomore catcher at Moorpark College, has signed a letter of intent to play next season at Lewis-Clark College in Lewiston, Ida.

Marine played at Lewis-Clark’s baseball field in 1989 as a member of the Woodland Hills West American Legion team, which won the Legion World Series title later that summer. Marine, who was selected on a draft-and-follow basis by the Detroit Tigers last June, was named the national 1989 Legion Player of the Year.

Marine will join former Legion teammate Gregg Sheren at Lewis-Clark. Rick Banuelos, a sophomore shortstop at Pierce and another of Marine’s former Woodland Hills West teammates, also has signed with Lewis-Clark, which competes at the NAIA level.

John Wordin of West Hills, riding competing for the Velo Avanti-Mrs. Gooch’s Racing Team, won the 25-mile Atascadero (Calif.) Criterium on Sunday, beating 80 riders with a time of 55 minutes.

Wordin placed fourth Saturday in the Estrella Road Race near Paso Robles, Calif.

Wordin finished in the lead pack at Estrella, five feet behind the winner. The top four finishers completed the 70-mile race in 2 hours and 40 minutes.

Thurlow Rogers of Van Nuys won the 20-mile Rio Hondo Criterium on Sunday. Both Rogers and Wordin will be competing in the La Canada Grand Prix at Descanso Gardens on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Former Dodger All-Star Ron Cey is scheduled to appear at a sports card show Saturday in the Cleveland High gym. Proceeds will benefit the Cleveland football program.

Cey is scheduled to appear from noon to 1 p.m. Space is still available for those wishing to display cards. Admission is $1. Information: (818) 986-8973.

David Lowham and Jill Trehearne were honored at a banquet Monday as the Cal State Northridge men’s and women’s scholar-athletes of the year.

Lowham, a senior member of the swimming team, has a grade-point average of 3.93. Lowham, a Ridgecrest native, is a finance major and competes in the butterfly.

Trehearne, a junior outside hitter from Eureka and a business major, has a cumulative grade-point average of 3.81, the highest among all of Northridge’s female athletes.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

Granada Hills 7, Kennedy 5--Trailing, 3-2, Granada Hills scored five times in the seventh inning in a North Valley League game at Kennedy.

Robb Weinzimer (two hits) doubled home two runs in the seventh and Heath McElwee (three hits) and Gary Matthews each followed with run-scoring hits to lead Granada Hills (12-4, 7-4).

John Davis, Jeff Tagliaferri and David Bourne each had two hits for Kennedy (14-6, 7-4). Tagliaferri’s two-run homer in the third tied the game, 2-2.

Right-hander Mike Cuthbert (4-1) allowed eight hits and earned the victory. Miguel Diaz (4-1) took the loss.

San Fernando 3, Cleveland 0--Javier Lujan’s two-run double in the first inning was all the Tigers (8-8, 4-7) needed to beat Cleveland (9-6-1, 5-6) in a North Valley League game.

San Fernando junior right-hander John Romero (4-0) scattered five hits, struck out six and walked one. Ethan Rodriguez and Luis Rodriguez each had two hits for the Tigers.

Chatsworth 3, El Camino Real 2--The Chancellors (9-8, 6-5) scored two runs in the third on back-to-back sacrifice fly balls by Brian LeCour and Brandon Nickens to take a 3-0 lead in a West Valley League game.

El Camino Real (11-5, 7-4) scored two in the sixth on run-scoring singles by Randy Wolf and Dan Cey (two for two) to close the gap to 3-2.

Nickens (4-2), a senior right-hander, allowed six hits, struck out four and walked six.

Eddie Ramos and David Stevenson each had two hits for the Chancellors, who committed five errors.

Taft 9, Reseda 1--Mike Sweeney doubled twice and drove in two runs to lead Taft (10-5-1, 8-3) in a West Valley League game at home.

John Erganian and Gregg Zutler each added two hits for Taft. Left-hander Justin Siegel pitched five innings, allowed one run on six hits, struck out five and walked one.

Santa Paula 12, Santa Clara 1--Eddie Rabago went three for four with a three-run double in the fourth to help the Cardinals (9-9, 5-2) upset visiting Santa Clara (6-1 in league) in a Frontier League game.

Efrain Munoz went three for four for the Cardinals, who outhit Santa Clara, 15-4.

Fillmore 4, Calabasas 0--Jaime Duran went two for two to lead Fillmore (10-3, 5-2) to a Frontier League victory. Calabasas is 5-9, 2-6.

Crossroads 3, Highland 1--Highland (5-10) was held to just three hits in the championship game of the L.A. Baptist tournament at Crossroads.

Jim Reel (4-6) took the loss for Highland.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Cleveland d. Granada Hills, 15-10, 10-15, 16-14, 9-15, 15-6--Loc Tran had 30 kills and teammate Ryan Johnson added 15 as Cleveland (8-3, 5-3) outlasted Granada Hills in a Northwest Valley Conference match at Cleveland.

Bobby Curtis had 21 kills and Mike Augustin added 15 for Granada Hills (8-3, 5-3).

Poly d. Sylmar, 15-3, 15-6, 15-7--Ron Botley had 11 kills to lead Poly (7-4, 4-3) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference match at home.

Sherman Oaks CES d. Grant, 15-12, 15-17, 15-10, 15-10--Cinchai Chuvichian and John Cannon each had 18 kills to lead Sherman Oaks (5-6, 4-3) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference match at home.

Birmingham d. Canoga Park, 15-5, 15-2, 10-15, 15-11--Josh Bailey had 24 kills and Seon Kim added 11 kills to lead Birmingham (10-2, 8-2) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference match at Canoga Park.

HIGH SCHOOL GOLF

Hart 195, Burroughs 255--Hart senior Jason Gore shot a one-under 34 to lead Hart (15-0, 7-0) in a Foothill League match at DeBell Golf Course in Burbank. Gore, who has signed a letter of intent with Arizona, is even par for the year.
