HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Distaso Shuts Out Schurr to Keep Hart Unbeaten in Foothill Play

Doug Distaso tossed a four-hitter and John Aguilar hit a three-run home run to lead Hart High past host Schurr, 7-0, Tuesday in a Foothill League game.

Distaso, a senior right-hander who improved to 6-0, struck out five and walked three for Hart (17-2, 10-0 in league play). Schurr fell to 10-4, 7-3.

Van Nuys 6, Birmingham 5--With the score tied, 5-5, in the sixth, Patrick Alvarado tripled with one out and scored on a ground ball to shortstop as host Van Nuys (9-6, 6-5), which trailed, 4-0, after four innings, earned a Valley Pac-8 Conference victory.

Poly 11, North Hollywood 0--Orlando Chavarria was three for three with two runs batted in and three pitchers combined on a two-hitter for host Poly (12-4, 9-2) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game.

Saugus 6, Canyon 4--Danny Cato of Saugus (13-3-1, 7-0) was two for four and drove in the last two runs to win a Golden League game at Canyon. Bobby Cowan allowed two hits and no runs in five innings of relief for Saugus (13-3-1, 7-0).

Palmdale 6, Antelope Valley 3--Todd Berry allowed one hit and no runs over his final 3 2/3 innings of relief to lead the host Falcons (10-7, 5-3) to a Golden League win. Chris Paxton and Dan Salazar each had two RBIs for Palmdale.

Hueneme 5, Buena 2--Chris Gonzales pitched 3 2/3 innings of one-hit relief to pick up the win and Marco Grajales worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh to give the host Vikings (10-8-1, 3-5-1) a Channel League victory.

Franklin 7, Verdugo Hills 5--Richard Lucero and Matt Fitzgerald each had two hits for host Verdugo Hills in a Northern Conference game.

Glendale 17, Hoover 6--Mark Haft was four for five and Brenden Barrett and Frank Taormina each drove in three runs for visiting Glendale (8-7, 5-5) in a Pacific League game.

Arcadia 9, Crescenta Valley 1--Josh Willis and Aaron Schaefer each had two hits for Crescenta Valley (6-11-1, 2-7-1) in the Pacific League game at Arcadia.

Montclair Prep 16, L.A. Baptist 2--Brad Fullmer was four for five with three doubles, two runs scored and two RBIs for Montclair Prep in the Alpha League game at Van Nuys-Sherman Oaks field.

Moorpark 7, Bishop Diego 2--Ken Ditto allowed four hits and struck out four to lead Moorpark (14-1, 9-0) in a Tri-Valley League game at Bishop Diego. Ditto improved to 7-0 and Jake Flesher drove in three runs.

Oak Park 11, Carpinteria 2--Jeff Gibbons of Oak Park (10-6, 4-4) pitched his first high school no-hitter, but gave up two unearned runs in the Tri-Valley League game at Carpinteria. Gibbons (7-1) struck out 14 and walked six.

Santa Paula 16, Nordhoff 4--A seven-run third inning sparked Santa Paula (10-9, 6-2) to a Frontier League win at home. Santa Paula’s Joe Aguilar was two for three and scored three runs.

Grant 2, Sylmar 0--The Lancers (12-4, 10-1) scored two runs in the sixth on Jim Guth’s sacrifice fly and Nick Oriti’s single in a East Valley League game.

Monroe 6, Canoga Park 2--Robert Ballester struck out nine and scattered seven hits to guide visiting Monroe (9-2, 3-0) to a Mid-Valley League win. George Dorado of Monroe had two triples.

Faith Baptist 6, Whitney 5--Rani Zahr scored the winning run in the seventh when Judd Granzo’s hard slide forced Whitney’s second baseman to overthrow first base in an attempt to complete a inning-ending double play in the Delphic League game at Faith Baptist.

SOFTBALL

Crescenta Valley 16, Pasadena 0--Stacy Atwood and Danielle Robertshaw combined on a no-hitter for the host Falcons (15-2, 4-1) in a Pacific League game.

Kim Welch was three for three with a three-run homer and J.J. Canon went for four for four with three RBIs. The win was the 200th in Coach Dan Berry’s 10 years at Crescenta Valley.

Simi Valley 5, Westlake 2--Yody Roache, Tracy Hansen and Kathy Beasley each had two hits in the Pioneers’ Marmonte League win.

Thousand Oaks 4, Camarillo 3--Carrie Russell (12-4) struck out 12 and drove in a run to lead host Thousand Oaks (12-4, 8-1) in a Marmonte League game. Nicole Ochoa tripled, singled and had two RBIs for Thousand Oaks.

Quartz Hill 13, Ridgecrest Burroughs 2--Kim Craycraft had two hits, including a solo home run, to lead Quartz Hill (16-2, 4-1) in a Golden League game.

Hart 2, Burbank 1--Erin Hull’s two-out single scored Tracy Clark to break a 1-1 tie in the seventh inning for Hart (12-4, 5-0) in a Foothill League game at Burbank.

Hoover 17, Muir 0--Nancy Evans and Tracy Christiansen combined on a one-hitter to lead Hoover (16-2, 4-0) in a Pacific League game at Muir.

Saugus 3, Canyon 1--Kerry Coudry (14-1) struck out nine and allowed one hit for Saugus (19-1, 5-0) in a Golden League game.

Cleveland 15, Kennedy 4--Marsha Brown was four for four to lead Cleveland in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Kennedy. Liz Lopez had three hits, including a double and triple.

La Reina 10, Oak Park 0--Michelle St. Pierre allowed only one hit and was two for three with three RBIs to lead host La Reina (9-4, 4-1) in a Tri-Valley League game.

Granada Hills 14, San Fernando 4--Jessica Shapiro (7-1) pitched three shutout innings in relief for Granada Hills (12-2, 6-1) in the Northwest Valley League game.

Calabasas 3, Louisville 2--Heather Siegel scored from third on a wild pitch in the seventh to lift the host Coyotes (11-3) to a nonleague victory.

Burroughs 17, Alhambra 1--Pitcher Erin Johnson helped herself, going three for four with two RBIs, in addition to tossing a one-hitter with seven strikeouts for the visiting Indians (8-11, 3-2).

Moorpark 28, Bishop Diego 0--Freshman Mindy Penrod (4-0) pitched a no-hitter and had four hits for Moorpark in a Tri-Valley League game at Bishop Diego.

BOYS’ TRACK

Hart 81, Burbank 46--Montraez Bailey, Paul De La Cerda and Derieck Charles won two events each for host Hart to help the Indians (7-0, 5-0) clinch their fourth consecutive Foothill League title after failing to win a title between 1969 and 1988.

GIRLS’ TRACK

Hart 86, Burbank 32--Melissa Dunkerley won three events for host Hart (7-0, 5-0) to help the Indians clinched their second consecutive Foothill League title.
