PREP SOFTBALL ROUNDUP : Foothill Drops El Modena Out of First Place

Senior Leeann Gonzalez pitched a three-hitter as Foothill took sole possession of first place with a 2-0 victory over El Modena in a Century League softball game Tuesday at El Modena.

Gonzalez (14-5) walked none and struck out six. She faced one over the minimum for Foothill (16-7, 5-0 in league). El Modena is 12-6, 4-1. The teams were tied for the league lead before the game.

Christina Mazurie had an RBI single in the first and Julie Metzger had an RBI single in the fourth for Foothill.

In other Century League games:

Canyon 2, Villa Park 1 (11 innings)--Tracey Thomas’ RBI single scored Keri Bransom, who tripled in the 11th for host Canyon (11-8-1, 3-2).

Orange 10, Santa Ana Valley 4--Chris Puccio had three hits, three runs scored and an RBI for host Orange (8-7, 1-4).

In the Arrowhead League:

Calvary Chapel 11, Leffingwell Christian 0--Sophomore Kim Schroy (9-4) pitched a no-hitter with nine strikeouts for visiting Calvary Chapel (9-7, 5-0).

In the Empire League:

Los Alamitos 1, Loara 0--Kandi Rehard drove in Carolyn Wilson with the winning run for Los Alamitos (12-4-1, 5-0). Wilson scored with two outs in the inning when the right fielder dropped Rehard’s fly ball.

El Dorado 6, Katella 3--Traci Vargas had a single, a triple and three RBIs for El Dorado (12-7, 3-2).

Cypress 5, Esperanza 0--Nikki Espriu hit a two-run double in the second and Liz Moore hit her third home run in the sixth for visiting Cypress (16-4, 3-2), the sixth-ranked team in the county.

In the Freeway League:

La Habra 3, Sonora 0--Dani Ortega pitched a two-hitter and struck out 14 for La Habra (17-2, 5-0).

Sunny Hills 1, Fullerton 0 (12 innings)--Bianca Loverde walked with the bases loaded to score the winning run for Sunny Hills. Amy Frelich stole four bases, improving her county-leading total to 30 for host Fullerton (11-10, 3-2).

In the Garden Grove League:

Garden Grove 4, La Quinta 1--Autumn Gwinner was two for three with a triple and two runs scored to lead the host Argonauts (13-5-1, 6-2-1) at Mark Twain School.

Los Amigos 8, Santiago 7 (nine innings)--After Santiago scored to take a 7-6 lead in the top of the ninth, Gwen Johnson singled to drive in Firenia Valenzuela with the tying run, then Karrie Portillo drew a bases-loaded walk to score Jen Shulman with the winning run for host Los Amigos (11-3, 7-2).

Pacifica 1, Kennedy 0--Leslie Mascarenas had two doubles and drove in Valerie Downen with the game’s only run in the second inning to lead 10th-ranked Pacifica (15-4, 8-2) past ninth-ranked Kennedy.

Rancho Alamitos 2, Bolsa Grande 1--Theresa Agpalsa scored the winning run on a wild pitch for Rancho Alamitos (11-7-1, 6-3).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Trabuco Hills 14, Century 1--Brianna Burkman struck out 13 and pitched a one-hitter and Sarah Montanez hit a home run for Trabuco Hills (13-8, 4-1).

In the Sunset League:

Ocean View 9, Edison 1--Alison Murphy drove in two runs with a single in the third inning for Ocean View (11-9, 5-2).

Fountain Valley 5, Westminster 2--Robin Northcraft was three for four to pace the Barons (13-3, 8-0) at Westminster (3-5). Jennifer Allchin, Danelle Lovetro and Jodi Bixler each had two hits and an RBI for Fountain Valley, ranked third in the county.

In the Olympic League:

Cerritos Valley Christian 5, Capistrano Valley Christian 0--Cindy Dykstra pitched a no-hitter with 11 strikeouts for Valley Christian (8-3, 6-1).
