VENTURA : Music-Store Mural Gets a Reprieve

Share

The Wild Planet music store in downtown Ventura will be allowed to keep its mural of neon green and red flames painted on the building’s facade at least until the city completes its downtown Specific Plan in about a year, architectural planners decided Monday.

The city’s Architectural Review Board voted 5 to 0 to reverse its earlier decision asking that the eye-catching mural be removed.

The officials said it would be best to leave the decision up to the committee assembling the downtown plan, which will regulate architecture and signs in the Main Street area near City Hall.

Store manager Heidi Haines, who attended the board’s Monday meeting, said she was pleased with the outcome.

“When the time comes for the Specific Plan to be approved, we will urge them to take into consideration that the community wants art as part of its daily existence,” she said, adding that more than 3,000 people have signed a petition asking that the mural be allowed to stay.
