Braatz took some extra batting practice the day before Estancia’s Pacific Coast League game Thursday against Laguna Beach. “She went to her traveling team coach the night before and she said she had blisters from hitting so much,” said Frank Braatz, Estancia coach and Leah’s father. “But it helped her--obviously, huh?” Indeed. Braatz went five for five with two home runs, two doubles and eight runs batted in as the Eagles defeated the Artists, 12-0. In Estancia’s three victories during the week, Braatz had nine hits in eleven at-bats to raise her average to .468. She also picked up a victory by pitching four innings of relief in a 13-12 decision over Costa Mesa. During the week, she had three home runs, three doubles, scored seven runs and drove in 13.

Other top performers:

Leeann Gonzalez, Foothill pitcher, who had two shutouts last week. On Tuesday, the right-hander defeated El Modena, 2-0, on a three-hitter to help the Knights gain sole possession of first place in the Century League. On Thursday, Gonzalez defeated Canyon, 2-0, with a one-hit, 16-strikeout performance.

Terry Kobata, Mater Dei pitcher, who had a perfect game Saturday to help the Monarchs defeat Garden Grove, 1-0, in the first game of a nonleague doubleheader. It was the second no-hitter of the season for the senior right-hander.

Adara Newidouski, Dana Hills shotput and discus thrower, set school records in both events last week. She threw the discus 136 feet 8 inches and the shot 37-1 3/4.
