The Boston Red Sox sent slumping first baseman Mo Vaughn, benched over the weekend, to Pawtucket and recalled utility man Mike Brumley.

Vaughn, 24, figured to compete with Carlos Quintana for the starting spot this spring. But Quintana broke his arm in an automobile accident in Venezuela and was put on the disabled list.

In 23 games, Vaughn was batting .185 with 12 hits, including two home runs and a double, and 11 RBIs. He also had committed four errors and registered 22 strikeouts.

Pitcher Gene Harris, who announced last week that he was retiring from baseball to pursue an NFL career, was traded from the Seattle Mariners to the San Diego Padres for a minor leaguer.

Harris, 27, pitched in eight games for Seattle this season. He was 0-0 with a 7.00 ERA, allowing eight hits and six walks in nine innings. The Mariners received outfielder Will Taylor, 23.

George Brett’s name was missing from baseball’s All-Star ballot, released on Monday.

Brett, a 13-time All-Star, is the Royals’ designated hitter and so was dropped from the ballot, which includes only position players. Wally Joyner was listed as Kansas City’s first baseman and Gregg Jefferies as the third baseman.
