UC Irvine Golf Team Selected for Regional
The UC Irvine men’s golf team has been selected to compete in the NCAA West Regional May 21-23 at Tucson National Golf Club.
This will be the Anteaters’ first appearance in NCAA Division I postseason play. Irvine, which moved to Division I in 1977, won the 1975 Division II title.
Irvine is led by William Yanagisawa, a sophomore from Long Beach Poly who has finished in the top 10 in seven tournaments this season and has a 72.95 stroke average. Senior Joey Sugar, from Esperanza High, is averaging 73.19 and also has seven top-10 finishes.
Irvine has won three tournaments--the Aztec, Sacramento State and Anteater invitationals--and finished third in three others.
There will be 18 teams in the West Regional.
