Mann Named State’s Top Scholar-Athlete

Sunny Hills two-sport standout Terry Mann has been named CIF-Reebok boys’ scholar-athlete of the year.

Mann was selected among 650 applicants throughout the state based on his 4.6 grade-point average and achievements on the Lancers’ basketball and track teams.

Mann led Sunny Hills’ basketball team to two consecutive Freeway League titles and became the school’s career and single-season scoring leader. He also set a league record in track by clearing 6 feet 11 in the high jump as a junior.

But perhaps Mann’s most impressive achievement was maintaining straight A’s at Sunny Hills and becoming the class valedictorian. He will attend Harvard University in the fall and plans to major in philosophy and history.

“It makes you feel special when you win something like this,” Mann said. “I was lucky in that my parents always emphasized academics. A lot of people have a misguided view about athletics. Athletics are fun, but very few athletes get college scholarships. School is what’s important.”

Mann will receive a $2,000 scholarship from Reebok that will be presented at the State Track and Field championships at Cerritos College on Saturday, June 6.

Michelle Wagner of San Jose Lynbrook was named recipient of the girls’ award.

Steve Hiskey of Brea-Olinda will coach the North team and Mike Dodd of Huntington Beach will coach the South team in the Orange County all-star baseball game scheduled June 12 at Glover Stadium in Anaheim.

Hiskey led Brea-Olinda to the Orange League championship. Dodd led Huntington Beach to a school-record 21 victories and the Sunset League title.

Jason Surrell of Irvine High School has signed a letter of intent to play soccer at Azusa Pacific, Irvine athletic director Rick Curtis said.

Surrell was a three-year varsity letterman at Irvine and a two-time All-South Coast League selection as a midfielder.

Western defensive back Jason Christensen has been named to the North squad for the Orange County football all-star game, replacing Garden Grove tight end Brandon Hoalton.

Hoalton quit the team to concentrate on baseball this summer. The game is scheduled July 10 at Orange Coast College.
