Chu Advances to 2nd Round in Tournament

Vo Chu of San Diego got by his first-round opponent in the boys 16 division of the Jack Kramer Invitational, a tournament featuring the nation’s top-ranked juniors, at Escondido’s Canyon Hills Racquet Club. By virtue of his 6-2, 6-4 victory over Logan Woolley of Ogden, Utah, Chu moves into today’s second round against No. 2-seeded Cecil Mamiit of Los Angeles.

Three other area juniors competed. In boys 16, Jon Gilula of La Jolla lost to Jan-Michael Gambill of Spokane, Wash., 6-1, 6-4. In the boys 18 division, James Conda of Bonita lost to Chad Dudley of Kailua, Hawaii, 6-2, 6-4; and Jon Elsberry of La Jolla lost to No. 2-seeded Ryan Junio of Cerritos, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.

All six UC San Diego singles players lost in straight sets as the Tritons lost, 6-0, to host Emory in the consolation round of the NCAA Division III men’s tournament. UCSD will play Redlands for seventh place today at noon.

TRACK AND FIELD

The UC San Diego men’s team placed third out of six schools at the CCAA track and field championships at Cal State Los Angeles with 56 points. It was a distant finish from first-place Cal State L.A. (202 points) and from second-place Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (197).

The UCSD women placed fourth with 87 points. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo was first with 191.5 points.

The top finisher for the men was Damian Coleman, who placed third in the triple jump at 47-feet-10. William McCoy of CSLA was first at 49-6 1/4.

The UCSD women had two first-place finishers: Denise McFayden won the 1,500 meters at 4 minutes 34.89 seconds, and Renee Sprowl won the triple jump with a mark of 36-6 1/4.
