PLNC’s Karlsson Wins NAIA Championship

Per Karlsson became Point Loma Nazarene College’s 10th national champion in its track and field history Thursday when he won the hammer throw with a record hurl at the NAIA championships in Abbotsford, Canada.

Karlsson’s throw of 231-feet-2 is a new meet and NAIA record.

Point Loma’s first national champion came in 1953.

Other high finishers for PLNC included: Ronnie Skold, whose long jump of 23-9 was good for second place; Christian Andreasson, whose 191-11 javelin throw placed him seventh; and Anna Mark, whose long jump of 18-7 placed her seventh.

PLNC also has a couple athletes in contention for medals in the decathlon and the heptathlon. After five events in the 10-event decathlon, Stephan Kallenberg is in second with 3,617 points. In the eight-event heptathlon, Alicia Harasty is in ninth place with 2,500 points after four events.

GOLF

Matthew Stottern of UC San Diego is tied for seventh, and teammate Jeremy Moe is tied for ninth after the first three rounds at the NCAA Division III golf championships.

After a third-round 73, Stottern has a total of 221, four strokes off the lead, and Moe is seven back at 224 at the par-72, 6,454-yard Wooster Country Club in Wooster, Ohio.

With one round to go, Jon Lindquist (Gustavus Adolphus), Dave Jukes (Methodist) and David Hathaway (Skidmore) are setting the pace at 217.

In the team standings, UCSD improved to third from fourth place after the third round. At 914, UCSD is 11 strokes behind Methodist and five back of Salem State.

SOFTBALL

Tami Fa’Agata, a Palomar College outfielder, signed a letter of intent with Cal State Fullerton. Fa’Agata was the Southern California community college player of the year in 1991, hitting .394.
