Clark Takes Position as Canyons Assistant in Men’s Basketball

John Clark, who resigned last season as basketball coach at Saugus High, said Friday that he has accepted an assistant coaching position with the men’s team at College of the Canyons.

Clark, 46, will serve as an assistant to Lee Smelser while remaining a math teacher at Saugus.

“It’s a good opportunity for me,” Clark said. “I get to stay involved in the game and I get to work with a really good guy in Lee Smelser. I’m looking forward to it.”

Clark compiled a 119-115 record at Saugus from 1983-92. He led the Centurions to a Southern Section 3-A Division championship in 1987 after the Centurions finished third in the Golden League and entered the playoffs as a wild-card team.

Outfielder Darrell McMillin and pitcher Steve Dempsey of Cal Lutheran have been selected to the NCAA Division III All-American team by the American Baseball Coaches Assn.

McMillin, a junior from Ventura College and Ventura High, hit a school-record 19 home runs and batted .405 during the regular season. Dempsey, a senior right-hander, is 10-1 with a 2.22 earned-run average in 93 1/3 innings.

Dan Smith, a senior shortstop from Newbury Park High, was selected to the second team, and Pat Norville, a junior pitcher, was selected to the third team.

Brian Eldridge, a senior second baseman at Oklahoma, has been named All-American by Collegiate Baseball magazine.

Eldridge, a Monroe High graduate, batted .394 with 23 home runs and 76 runs batted in during the regular season.

Nora Seymour, 12, of Agoura Hills set a state record on the uneven bars in the U.S. Gymnastics Federation level-five sectional championships in Camarillo last Saturday. Seymour’s 9.85 score is the highest ever awarded in California to a level-five or level-six gymnast. World-class gymnasts compete at level 10.

Seymour, who trains at the Junior Elite center in Canoga Park, also won the floor exercise (8.85) and the all-around titles (34.20) in the meet.
