A second man has died of a gunshot wound to the head after a double shooting over the holiday weekend, police said Tuesday.

The gunman, a passenger in a 1986 Nissan pickup truck that had stopped at a red light at Bristol Street and Civic Center Drive, shot a fellow passenger, who was sitting in the truck’s camper, and the driver, Lt. Robert Helton said.

The gunman then got into a getaway car and was driven off about 5 p.m. Monday, Helton said.

The passenger found in the camper was pronounced dead at the UCI Medical Center in Orange. He was 27 with a last known address in Santa Ana, police said.

The driver, a 26-year-old Santa Ana man, died nearly six hours later at the same hospital, Helton said. Officials declined to release their identities, pending notification of relatives.

Witnesses said that when the truck stopped at the signal, the gunman turned and shot his fellow passenger through an open sliding window. He opened the passenger door, ran to the other side of the truck and shot the driver through his open window, Helton said.

The assailant then got into a black Nissan Sentra that had stopped next to the truck in the left-turn lane and escaped north on Bristol.

The double shooting does not seem to be related to gangs, Helton said. Officers closed down the northbound lanes of Bristol Street for nearly three hours from Civic Center Drive to 5th Street.
