BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Parrish May Play With Injured Elbow

Catcher Lance Parrish, who has been on the disabled list since May 5 because of a bone spur on his right elbow, said he still has some tightness and pain but is ready to try to play with it.

“We’re going to try to get him baseball ready and see what the reaction is,” trainer Ned Bergert said of a process that accelerated Tuesday with the first batting practice Parrish has taken since going on the disabled list and some continued throwing.

“The way I understand it,” Parrish said, “this will be the program for the next few days, or until I’ve satisfied everyone that I’m capable of playing again.

“I still have a little pain and tightness, but I don’t know if I need more time or it’s going to stay with me for the duration. It’s a tough call, but I feel like I can go out and play and, hopefully, continue to keep the inflammation out.”

The alternative would be arthroscopic surgery and an eight-week rehabilitation, a process Parrish hopes to avoid, particularly since his contract expires at the end of the season.

“I’m kind of in a dilemma in that I have to think of my future, and my future is now,” he said. “It would be different if I had a multiyear contract, but I feel like I have to put some numbers up, and I can’t do that unless I’m playing.”

If the bus accident and a 2-7 trip wasn’t bad enough, acting Manager John Wathan returned to the condominium he is renting in Tustin to find that his van had been impounded by police because he did not obtain a parking sticker. “I have mental scars from the wreck and financial scars from having the van impounded,” Wathan said. . . . Wathan has decided to operate from the dugout during Manager Buck Rodgers’ absence, with bullpen coach Ken Macha replacing him at third. . . . Rodgers, recovering from Sunday’s surgery at Centinela Hospital Medical Center, began to make the adjustment to a wheelchair Tuesday, according to an Angel spokesman. . . . Alvin Davis, who suffered a bruised kidney in the accident, was cleared to play, but is expected only to pinch-hit until the weekend, while he regains his timing in batting practice.
