PREP TRACK: MASTERS MEET : Martinez Tries to Get Them on Run Again

Angel Martinez of San Gabriel High will try to continue his domination of Southern California’s best distance runners tonight in the Masters track and field meet at Cerritos College.

Martinez will be among the athletes from all four Southern Section divisions competing for one of five qualifying positions in each event for the state meet June 5-6, also at Cerritos College. Field events will begin at 5:30, running events at 7.

Martinez, who has won every major race he has run this season, took the Southern Section Division 4-A 3,200 meters last week in 9 minutes 3.23 seconds. His main competition tonight will be Margarito Casillas of Glendale Hoover and Jeff Wilson of Newbury Park.

Other top performers include sprinter Gentry Bradley of Downey Pius X in the 100 and 200, Keith Moten of Los Angeles Loyola, Demond Smith of Hawthorne and Charlie Davidson of Santa Ana Saddleback in the hurdles, and Bryan Woodward of Long Beach Poly in the 800.

Junior Marion Jones of Thousand Oaks is two-time state champion in the girls’ 100 and 200 meters, and the sprint teams from Inglewood Morningside and Long Beach Poly will battle.
