Shoup Among 5 Inductees for Hall of Fame

Bob Shoup, former Cal Lutheran football coach, is one of five men who will be inducted into the Ventura County Hall of Fame on Saturday in ceremonies at the Radisson Suites Hotel in Oxnard.

Shoup, 60, became Cal Lutheran’s first football coach in 1962 and led the Kingsmen to 13 National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics District 3 championships.

In 1971, Cal Lutheran won the NAIA championship. In his 28 years of coaching at Cal Lutheran, Shoup compiled a record of 185-87-6.

Joining Shoup as new members are Marvin (Mo) Hodges, Dave Marquez, Mike Michel and Walter Joseph Musial.

Hodges, 75, has been an area game official for football, basketball and baseball since moving to Ventura County from Kansas in 1946.

Marquez, 61, is a former drag racer who retired in 1957 with more than 20 national and track records from his racing in Santa Maria, Bakersfield and Pomona. He also was a track standout at Santa Paula High.

Michel, 37, was a fifth-round draft pick of the Miami Dolphins in 1977. Michel, a kicker and punter, also played for Atlanta, Philadelphia and Washington in his professional career. He began his football career at Buena High and also played at Ventura College and Stanford.

Musial was a Ventura College football coach from 1948-51. He moved to Ventura High in 1952, where he served as a teacher, football coach and physical education department head for the next 27 years. He also coached baseball, golf, gymnastics and basketball at the school. Musial died in 1986 at 69.

The top athletes from Cal Lutheran and each Ventura County high school and junior college also will be honored. Special team awards will be presented to high schools that won Southern Section titles in any sport during the spring of 1991 and the 1991-92 school year.
