School: Marina High
Sport: Track and field
Event: Triple jump
Class: Junior
It can take years to master the technique necessary to be successful at the triple jump, which makes Parrish’s State title in his first season of high school track and field even more impressive. Parrish won the event on his final attempt Saturday, vaulting himself from seventh to first with a wind-aided mark of 49 feet 1 inch. It was 3 1/4 inches short of his personal best, which he set last week while winning the event at the Masters meet. But considering his previous best had been barely over 47 feet, it was plenty. “He’s the most explosive athlete I’ve coached in the 10 years I’ve been involved in track at Marina,” Coach Dick Degen said. “He’s the kind of kid who just doesn’t give up. There have been several times we thought he was going to have a horrible night, but then he comes back and does what he needs to do.”
Other top performers:
* Charlie Davidson, a Saddleback hurdler who won the State title in the 110-meter high hurdles with the best time of his career--a wind-aided 13.94 seconds.
* Nate Kuchera, Ethan Taub, Tad Heath and Aaron Taub, whose Foothill 1,600-meter relay team finished second at the State championship meet with a time of 3 minutes 16.81 seconds.
* Ryan O’Toole, who allowed only three hits in Irvine’s 4-2 victory over Covina Northview in the Division 4-A baseball semifinals.
