Notes on a Scorecard - June 10, 1992

After examining the American League West standings, I have concluded that the approval of the sale of the Seattle Mariners to a group headed by the president of Nintendo would be Japanese bashing. . . .

Among the lost arts in baseball is the hook slide. . . .

Perhaps Maury Wills will teach it to some of the prospects during his visit to the U.S. Olympic team trials this week at Millington, Tenn. . . .

It is a rare Monday night when both Tony Gwynn and Wade Boggs hit home runs, as they did this week. . . .

Cy Young Award winner Tom Glavine not only was chosen during the fourth round of the 1984 NHL draft by the Kings, he won the John Carlton award that year as the best prep hockey player in the Boston area. . . .

The Braves’ Glavine, of Billerica, Mass.; the St. Louis Cardinals’ Bob Tewksbury of Penacook, N.H., and the San Francisco Giants’ Bill Swift of Portland, Me., are making this a big season for pitchers from New England. . . .

That Tim Burke-Lee Guetterman trade between the Mets and Yankees must have New York in a tizzy. . . .

The next ballplayer who refuses to give an interview should look at the sagging attendance figures in Pittsburgh since both of the city’s newspapers went on strike. . . .

There has got to be a rule against hitters stepping out of the batter’s box for no reason at all. . . .

No longer is hot-hitting Darren Daulton known strictly as the other victim of Lenny Dykstra’s car crash. . . .

Wasn’t it just the other day that Darrin Sutton, a pitcher who signed an Angel minor league contract Monday, played catch with his dad Don on the sidelines before games at Dodger Stadium? . . .

Harold Miner, who was listed at 6 feet 5 and 210 pounds in the USC media guide, measured 6-4 and weighed 221 during the camp for NBA prospects at Chicago last week. . . .

Teams that have invited Miner for workouts and evaluation include Denver, Dallas, Houston, Minnesota, Philadelphia and Washington. Houston isn’t scheduled to draft until 11th in the first round, but the Rockets are considering trade offers for Hakeem Olajuwon that could bring them, among other things, a higher pick. . . .

Another USC guard, Duane Cooper, impressed scouts at Chicago with his ballhandling ability and speed. . . .

Oliver Miller of Arkansas impressed them with his weight, 301. . . .

Clipper center Olden Polynice, who was born in Port-au-Prince and lived in Haiti until he was seven, has become a spokesman for CARE’s Haitian relief drive. . . .

Ram wide receiver Henry Ellard plans to compete in the Olympic track and field trials at New Orleans June 19-21 after qualifying for the triple jump with a leap of 54-1 recently in Modesto. . . .

Ellard, who was fifth in the NCAA meet in 1982 while at Fresno State, hadn’t jumped competitively since 1986. . . .

Scott Norwood, who has been put on waivers by the Buffalo Bills, will be remembered as a Super Bowl goat, but let’s not forget that his 47-yard field goal attempt against the New York Giants in 1991 wasn’t exactly a chip shot. . . .

Notre Dame will have a week off before playing USC on Nov. 28 at the Coliseum. . . .

“Are We Winning Yet? How Women Are Changing Sports and Sports Are Changing Women” (Random House) by Mariah Burton Nelson has been selected winner of the Amateur Athletic Foundation’s book award. . . .

The now horse at Hollywood Park appears to be Another Review. . . .

No list of the best TV sports analysts would be complete without Mary Carillo. . . .

Dean Lohuis’ boxing expertise would make him a good choice to succeed the late Charles Minker as executive director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission. . . .

Razor Ruddock resurfaces June 26 on a Showtime card at Cleveland against the unbeaten and untested Phil Jackson. . . .

World Boxing Council light-flyweight champion Humberto (Chiquita) Gonzalez was behind on judges’ cards by four points before knocking Kim Kwang-Sun down in the 11th round and by two before stopping him in the 12th Sunday in Seoul. . . .

Trainer Jackie McCoy was a terrific hire by the Venice-based VIP boxing stable. . . .

All three seniors on the basketball team--Don MacLean, Gerald Madkins and Darrick Martin--and 16 of the 19 seniors on the football team will participate in graduation ceremonies at UCLA this weekend. . . .

The Portland Trail Blazers’ problem: Do you stay with what got you to the NBA finals--running and gunning--or muscle up for a change and try some of the tactics that worked so well for the New York Knicks against the Chicago Bulls?
