Arcadia Athlete Invited to U.S. Soccer Tryouts

Erin Martin of Arcadia has been invited to try out for the U.S. junior national soccer team.
Martin, 17, was one of 24 players age 20 and under who received an invitation to the two-week training camp at Colorado Springs, Colo.
Martin, a junior at Temple City High, scored 93 goals last season to break the state single-season scoring record of 63 and her Southern Section record of 62 set when she was a sophomore.
Martin helped lead the Rams to their third consecutive appearance in the 3-A Division quarterfinals.
Bryan Bridgewater of Cal State Los Angeles will compete in the 100 and 200 meters at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials, beginning today in New Orleans.
Bridgewater set a NCAA Division II record of 10.15 seconds in winning the 100 at the national championships in San Angelo, Tex. last month. He also won the 200 in 20.15, the third-fastest Division II time ever. Both times are among the top 10 in the world this season.
Muir High’s Jacques Salberg won the two-mile in 9 minutes 19.35 seconds at the National Outdoor Scholastic Track and Field championships at Birmingham High in Van Nuys.
A week earlier, the senior set a school 3,200-meter record in placing third in 9:04.19 in a race won by Angel Martinez of San Gabriel.
The Amateur Athletic Foundation Rose Bowl Aquatic Center is sponsoring a triathlon that will be held July 26 in the Arroyo Seco area of Pasadena.
The event, open to all age groups and experience levels, includes a three-mile run, 10-mile bike ride and 400-meter swim. Participants may compete as individuals or as part of relay teams.

Larry Watanabe has been named wrestling coach at Mt. San Antonio College, replacing Fred Burri, who retired after 34 years.
Watanabe coached at Nogales High for 15 years, where he led the Nobles to five league championships and the Southern Section title in 1980.
Watanabe wrestled for Mt. SAC for two years and won the 126-pound state championship in 1969-70.
The Whittier Narrows Tennis Center in South El Monte is offering programs for players ages 4 to 18.
Three sessions will be held, with classes available in the morning and afternoon.

Donnie Warren, a former standout at Mt. SAC who has played tight end for the Washington Redskins for 13 years, has been selected for induction into the California Community College Sports Hall of Fame.
Warren played at Mt. SAC from 1975-77 before transferring to San Diego State. He was selected by the Redskins in the fourth round of the 1979 NFL draft.
Warren is the third Mt. SAC representative to be inducted into the CCC Sports Hall of Fame. Pole vaulter Bob Seagren and track Coach/Administrator Hilmer Lodge are the others.
Chris Hunt, a catcher on the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team, and Kristin Harkins, who was all-conference in soccer, cross-country and track, were selected as the school’s athletes of the year by Cal Poly Associates.
Hunt, a senior, batted .337 with six home runs and 35 runs batted in. He was named to the All-California Collegiate Athletic Assn. first team and was an All-West Region selection.
Harkins, a senior, became Pomona’s all-time assist and shot leader in soccer, finished 13th at the Division II West Regional meet in cross-country and fifth in the 1,500-meter event at the Division II track and field championships.
The Bonita High volleyball program is sponsoring a series of grass-court volleyball tournaments on June 27, July 18, Aug. 1 and Aug. 22.
The doubles tournaments include men’s and women’s A, B, and Novice divisions. There are also co-ed mixed doubles.

Azusa Pacific University is sponsoring a grass-court volleyball tournament July 18 with competition in co-ed, men’s A and B doubles and women’s A doubles.
Awards will be presented to first-and second-place teams in each division.
