Laguna Beach Surfer Earns Day’s Best Score
Jeff Booth of Laguna Beach had Saturday’s highest score in the $22,000 Nissan Open surfing tournament at Oceanside, and Chris Billy of Dana Point, and Shane Beschen and Mike Parsons, both of San Clemente, also advanced to today’s quarterfinals.
Booth scored 33 out of a possible 40 points in the one- to two-foot waves south of the Municipal Pier. He also shared the highest single-wave score, 8.83, with Shane Powell.
Booth will face Rob Machado in a quarterfinal today. Machado has won three events on this year’s Bud Surf tour, including the last two.
Richie Collins of Newport Beach and Dino Andino of San Clemente were among those eliminated.
