A 21-year-old man who was attacked with a pickax in a Logan Heights park has died, authorities said.

Delphino Estrada died Saturday afternoon at UC San Diego Medical Center, where he had been treated for massive head wounds suffered in the June 14 attack at Memorial Park.

Estrada is the second person to die in a vicious series of assaults at Memorial Park. His attacker is believed to be the same person responsible for the May 30 slaying of 28-year-old Miguel Mata, who was beaten in the head with a baseball bat on Memorial Park’s baseball field, authorities said.

Last Monday, Police arrested Juan Jose Galvan at his home, less than a block from Memorial Park, saying they believe him responsible for the series of 11 assaults at the park from May 24 to June 14.

Other victims in the assault series suffered injuries ranging from bruises to broken bones. One 23-year-old woman jogger also sustained severe head and facial injuries.

Galvan, 23, returned to the neighborhood May 20 after being paroled from state prison. He served three years for assaulting a police officer in San Bernardino with a semiautomatic weapon.

A search of Galvan’s residence, where he lived with his parents, uncovered a pickax, police have said. Galvan was held at the Donovan prison on suspicion of violating parole but hasn’t yet been charged in the park attacks.
