Liane Sato, a former San Diego State standout, and Janet Cobbs, an assistant coach at Southwest High, were among the 12 players named to the U.S. Olympic women’s volleyball team Thursday.
Sato played at SDSU from 1985-86. Cobbs assisted Coach Fred Sills with the Southwest boys’ volleyball team this spring, and the Raiders won their first San Diego Section 3-A championship.
The 10 other members were sisters Kim and Elaina Oden of Irvine; Tammy Liley of Westminster; Tara Cross-Battle and Teee Sanders of Long Beach; Paula Weishoff of Torrance; Caren Kemner of Quincy, Ill.; Lori Endicott of Springfield, Mo.; Ruth Lawanson of Fresno; and Yoko Zetterlund of San Francisco.
The Odens’ attempt to become the first sister trio to make an Olympic team fell short when Bev Oden was among the last players cut. Also cut was Ann Schirman, a former standout at Poway.
