Paul to Meet Undefeated Gonzalez for Junior Welterweight Championship

Former International Boxing Federation lightweight champion Jimmy Paul will oppose undefeated Carlos Gonzalez for the vacant World Boxing Organization junior welterweight championship on Monday night at the Forum.

Paul, who resumed his career in August 1991 after nearly a four-year layoff, is 32-4 with 24 knockouts. He is the WBO’s eighth-ranked 140-pound contender and has won six consecutive bouts, including a seventh-round technical knockout of 1988 Olympian and previously unbeaten Todd Foster on Feb. 7 in Atlantic City, N.J.

In his last bout, Paul, 32, of Detroit, scored a sixth-round TKO of Bernard Gray.

Gonzales, 20, is the WBO’s No. 1 contender. The Mexico City native is 31-0 with 29 knockouts. He made his United States debut on May 11 by winning a 10-round decision against Tim Brooks at the Forum.

North American Boxing Federation flyweight champion Ysaias Zamudio (28-3-1, eight KOs) of Blythe fights Lorenzo Lopez (23-6-1, six KOs) of Mexico in a 10-round co-feature.

In a 10-round junior middleweight bout, Al Long (22-8-3, 12 KOs) meets Mario Solario (11-6, five KOs). Preliminaries open the program at 7.
