Leach Upset in Doubles at Wimbledon
Rick Leach’s hopes for another Wimbledon men’s doubles title were ended Friday when the Laguna Beach resident and 1990 champion and partner Kelly Jones were upset by 13th-seeded Guy Forget and Jakob Hlasek, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4, in a third-round match Monday. Leach and Jones were seeded third.
Two former members of the UC Irvine men’s team had their teams go down to defeat in mixed doubles. Trevor Kronemann and Ginger Helgeson lost a first-round match to Kent Kinnear and Rosalyn Fairbank-Nideffer, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, and Mike Briggs and Michelle Jaggard-Lai were ousted by eighth-seeded Tom Nijssen and Manon Bollegraf, 6-4, 6-4.
