Prep All-Star Football Practice Set to Kick Off

Practice begins next week for the 13th Hall of Fame high school all-star football game that will be played July 17 at Citrus College.

Eighty recently graduated seniors from the San Gabriel Valley will participate in the game, which benefits the scholarship fund of the National Football Foundation’s student-athlete program.

Quarterback Marc Ruiz of Baldwin Park, The Times’ San Gabriel Valley player of the year in 1991, will play for the East team.

Rosemead quarterback Matt Koffler, who signed a letter of intent with USC, will play for the West.

Soccer player Michelle Kennedy and softball player Michelle Myrdahl of Arcadia High were selected most valuable players of their respective sports in the Los Angeles Watts Summer Games last weekend.

Kennedy helped lead Arcadia to the championship of the soccer tournament. The Apaches defeated Pasadena Poly, 1-0, in the semifinals and Torrance, 5-1, in the final.

Myrdahl led Arcadia to a 6-1 victory over Franklin in the championship game of the softball tournament.

Chris Wilcox of San Gabriel finished 12th in the decathlon with 7,763 points at last week’s U.S. Olympic track and field trials at New Orleans.

John Schwepker, also of San Gabriel, withdrew from the competition because of injury after seven events with 4,750 points.

Mark Crear of USC, a former standout at Rowland High who was the NCAA champion in the 110-meter hurdles, was eliminated in the semifinals of his event when he hit a hurdle and finished in 14.09 seconds.

Claremont is holding registration for a co-ed slo-pitch softball tournament July 18-19 Cahuilla Park.

The entry fee is $150 per team and the registration deadline is July 13.

The 31st Glendora tennis tournament will be July 25-Aug. 2.

The tournament, sanctioned by the United States Tennis Assn., features adult, class and junior divisions.

Entry fees are $22 for singles and $24 for doubles. Trophies and awards will be presented to all finalists and $3,000 in prize money will be distributed to adult champions.

The Amateur Athletic Foundation Rose Bowl Aquatic Center is sponsoring a triathlon July 26 at the facility in the Arroyo Seco area of Pasadena.

The event includes a three-mile run, 10-mile bike stage and a 400-meter swim.

Awards will be presented to the top three finishers in each age division. Relay teams are also welcome.
