The search for a 12-year-old mentally disabled boy missing for a week in the rugged Sierra Nevada south of Lake Tahoe was called off Wednesday, authorities said.

“Today will be the last full day of searching for Kenny Miller,” Alpine County Sheriff’s Deputy Steve McEwen said. He said authorities will continue to look for the youth in a scaled-back operation as manpower is available.

The boy, who needs medication three times a day for seizures, was last seen throwing pebbles into a stream on June 23 while on a day hike with his parents and 10-year-old sister. They walked a short distance away to look at a cabin and he was gone when they returned a few minutes later, deputies said.

The boy’s father, Bob Miller of Oakhurst, issued a brief statement Wednesday thanking the searchers for their efforts. He also appealed to the public to report any sightings or leads.
