LOCAL NOTES : Cypress College Pitcher Signs With the Mets

Andy Trumpour, a freshman right-hander from Cypress College, has signed with the New York Mets, Cypress Coach Scott Pickler said Sunday.

Trumpour, from Savanna High School, was 7-3 with a 3.56 earned-run average for the Chargers. He also had 80 strikeouts.

Trumpour will play at Pittsfield, Mass., the Mets’ team in the Class-A New York-Penn League.

David Warady of Huntington Beach improved his lead by almost 40 minutes Sunday in the Runner’s World Trans America Footrace.

Warady won the 33.15-mile stage along Interstate 70 in Utah in 5 hours 57 minutes 2 seconds. He leads over second-place Richard Westbrook of Jonesboro, Ga., by 5:47.54 after 16 days.

Sandy Zubrin of the Mission Viejo Nadadores won the women’s platform diving title at the Southern California Invitational at Heritage Park in Irvine.

Zubrin finished with 353 points. Joy Burkholder, also of the Nadadores, was second with 347.50 points.

Gene Gurule, who has coached the Saddleback women’s cross-country team and had been the head track coach for the past six years, has stepped down from his walk-on position.

Gurule, who will remain as a teacher at Mission Viejo High School, coached the Saddleback women’s cross-country team to a second-place finish in the Orange Empire Conference last fall. His track teams each placed third.

Julie Leach, cross-country coach at Irvine Valley College, has been named the Orange Empire Conference female coach of the year.

It was the second postseason award for Leach, who shared the State women’s cross-country coaches of the year award with husband and co-coach Bill Leach.

Julie Leach, a physical education teacher at Irvine Valley, won the women’s division of the Ironman Triathlon and set a course record in 1982. She also competed in the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, finishing seventh in the 500-meter singles kayak event.

Wayne Tourda, an Aikido instructor at Saddleback College, will spend 10 days this summer working with the U.S. ski team conditioning camp at Point Loma College. The camp runs from July 6-15.

Tourda has been asked to help the athletes improve body control in an effort to reduce injuries resulting from falls.
