LOCAL NOTES : Booth Takes First-Round Lead in Junior Golf Event

Kellee Booth of Coto de Caza was in first place in the girls’ division after the first day of the Wilson Geneva national junior golf championship at Lake Geneva, Wis.

Booth shot a four-over par 76 to take a one-shot lead over Ji-Eun Park of Honolulu on the Palmer Course at the Geneva National Golf Club.

The three-round tournament continues today.

Scott Gibson of Huntington Beach shot one-over 73 and is in a four-way tie for second place after the first round of the Las Vegas Founders’ Legacy junior tournament.

Gibson, who graduated from Huntington Beach High last month and will attend Tulsa, trails Michael Ruiz of San Diego, who shot 72 at The Legacy Golf Club at Green Valley. Marty James of Clarkdale, Ariz., Chris Riley of San Diego and Stuart Cohen of Calabasas also shot 73.

The three-round tournament continues today.

Julie Sandoval has resigned after one year as women’s volleyball coach at Saddleback College to accept a full-time position as an assistant at Cal State Fullerton, the college announced Wednesday.

Sandoval led Saddleback to a 7-9 record (5-7 in the Orange Empire Conference) in her season with the Gauchos, her first as a head coach. For 13 years, she was an assistant at Santa Clara and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

During much of her time at Santa Clara, the team was coached by Mary Ellen Murchison, a former UC Irvine assistant who took over the Fullerton program two weeks ago.

Huntington Beach’s David Warady maintained his overall lead in the Runner’s World Trans America Footrace, finishing second over the 48-mile stage from Green River to Cisco, Utah.

Richard Westbrook of Jonesboro, Ga., won the stage, which was run on frontage roads beside Interstate 70, in 8 hours 5 minutes 12 seconds. Warady was second in 8:31.10.

After 822.45 miles and 19 stages, Warady has a cumulative time of 144 hours 10 minutes 57 seconds, 5:45.12 ahead of second-place Tom Rogozinski of Hagerstown, Md.
