LOCAL NOTES : Allison Rallies to Finish Second in Junior Golf

Alicia Allison of Santa Ana completed a two-round rally and finished second Friday at the Las Vegas Founders’ Legacy Junior golf tournament at Green Valley Country Club in Henderson, Nev.

Allison, who will be a junior at Foothill High this fall, shot 82 in the first round, but improved to a 70 Thursday and a two-over 74 Friday to finish with a 226-stroke total, a shot behind Skyli Yamada of Sandy, Utah, and Elise Kimm of North Hollywood. Yamada won the title in a playoff.

In the boys’ division, Scott Gibson, a Huntington Beach High graduate, shot five-over 77 and finished in a tie for 18th with a three-day total of 226. Gibson was tied for second after shooting 73 in the first round. San Diego’s Chris Riley, who won the CIF-SCGA title in June, shot 69 for a 212 total and won the title.

Twenty Orange County players will be on the Southern California Tennis Assn. team that will play a team from the Illawarra Suburbs Lawn Tennis Assn. in the USA/Australia Junior Pepsi Challenge Cup today and Sunday at the Nellie Gail Ranch Tennis and Swim Club in Laguna Hills.

The event comprises three age divisions: 18-and-under, 16-and-under and 14-and-under for boys and girls. Each division will have four singles players and two doubles teams playing a round robin.

The Orange County players are Greg and John Biorkman of Irvine; Tiffany Blackburn, Jeff Gahagan, Ryan Hammer, Dennis Harper, Noriko Hopkins, Elizabeth and Thomas Yim of Laguna Hills; Emily Barker of Newport Beach; Brandon Fallon of Dana Point; Brett Hankey and Holly Meyers of Huntington Beach; Steve Ho and Johnny Nguyen of Garden Grove; Helen Johnson of Lake Forest; Jason Kasner of Fountain Valley, and Anna Marie Scutetta, Elizabeth West and Josh West of Mission Viejo.

The Australian team represents a program from the Sydney suburbs that has been in existence since 1911 and produced International Tennis Hall of Fame members Rod Laver and Ken Rosewall.

Play begins at 9 a.m. both days.
