Raider Coach Art Shell was smiling broadly when the Raiders opened training camp Sunday. He had reason, because all eight Raider draft choices have agreed to or signed contracts and are in camp.

Defensive tackle Chester McGlockton of Clemson, the Raiders’ top pick, agreed to a multiyear deal and offensive tackle Greg Skrepenak of Michigan, their second-round pick, signed a four-year contract.

“It’s a very big break for us,” Shell said. “The quicker they’re in camp, the better it is for them and for us. They won’t have to do any extra work, and they can start from the beginning.

“It means that their agents and our people who negotiate contracts wanted to get these people in camp. That’s important. To hold out for an extra $2 isn’t worth it. And I won’t have to answer those questions about when so-and-so is coming in.”

The Raiders plan to use McGlockton, a 337-pound defensive lineman, at nose tackle and defensive end, and Skrepenak, a 316-pound offensive tackle, will play left tackle.

“They have a lot to learn,” Shell said. “They’ll find out that the level of play in the NFL is so much different than it was in college. But they’re quick learners.”

Skrepenak realizes he has a lot to learn.

“I don’t want to push it, because they’re some great guys on the defensive line, like Howie Long, Greg Townsend and Scott Davis,” Skrepenak said. “I know I’m going to get beat early, and I’m going to get a little frustrated. But hopefully I can keep that to a minimum and come back from it. Hopefully, by midseason I can get in there and make some kind of a contribution to the team.”

Other Raider draft choices who agreed to or signed contracts were defensive back Derrick Hoskins of Southern Mississippi, their fifth-round selection; center Tony Rowell of Florida, their sixth-round pick; running back Kevin Smith of UCLA and safety Curtis Cotton of Nebraska, their seventh round selections; linebacker Alberto White of Texas Southern, a 10th-round pick; and guard Tom Roth of Southern Illinois, their 12th-round pick. Although Raider veterans aren’t required to report until Thursday, some of the younger players, such as quarterback Todd Marinovich, are in camp.

Linebacker Aundray Bruce, signed as a Plan B free agent from the Atlanta Falcons, is also in camp. A star linebacker at Auburn, Bruce was the first pick in the 1988 draft. However, the Falcons moved him to tight end last season. The Raiders plan to use him as a linebacker.
