PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Schroeder, Evans and Benson Sign

Quarterbacks Jay Schroeder and Vince Evans and linebacker Thomas Benson signed with the Raiders Thursday. Although no terms were disclosed, Schroeder signed a one-year deal and Benson for two years.

The Raiders have seven unsigned players, including four starters: tailback Marcus Allen, linebacker Winston Moss and cornerbacks Lionel Washington and Terry McDaniel.

The Raiders’ other unsigned players are wide receiver Tim Brown, guard James FitzPatrick, and cornerback Elvis Patterson, the Raiders’ best special teams player.

Defensive ends Greg Townsend and Scott Davis, who are under contract, failed to report to camp Thursday by the 7 p.m. deadline.

“I’m a very optimistic guy, but I expect all those guys to show up,” Coach Art Shell said. “And I imagine the majority of them will show up. If they don’t, we’ll make adjustments and go on. We want to go forward and they’ll be behind.”

This is the third time in four seasons that Allen, who earned $1.1 million per season the last three years, hasn’t reported to camp on time because of a contract dispute.

One reason for the large number of holdouts may be the NFL antitrust suit in Minneapolis, which could grant players free agency and drive up the salary market.

The Raiders will participate in two practices a day through Sunday before the club leaves on Monday for Austin, Tex., to scrimmage the Dallas Cowboys.
