The Athletics Congress Meet Draws 6,000 Athletes to Mt. SAC

The Athletics Congress National Junior Olympics track and field championships continue this weekend at Mt. San Antonio College.

The event, which began Tuesday, has drawn about 6,000 athletes ages 8 to 18 who are competing in 15 individual events, three relays and multiple-events such as heptathlon and decathlon.

Competition is divided into five divisions: 10 and under, 11-12, 13-14, 15-16 and 17-18.

Admission is free.

Larry Rhoads of Murrieta, Calif., was the overall winner of the Amateur Athletic Federation Rose Bowl Triathlon on Sunday in Pasadena.

Rhoads, 33, finished a three-mile run, 10-mile bike ride and 400-meter swim in 45 minutes 5 seconds.

Robyn Vorous, 19, of Los Angeles won the women’s division in 51:42.

More than 400 participants competed in the event.

Jamie White, a catcher for the Pasadena City College softball team last season, was selected second-team All-American by the National Softball Coaches Assn.

White, the South Coast Conference player of the year, batted .347 and drove in 14 runs. She is the only player from Southern California selected to the first or second team.

White will attend Cal Poly Pomona in the fall.

The 31st Glendora tennis tournament continues with final matches this weekend.

The tournament, sanctioned by the United States Tennis Assn., features adult, class and junior divisions.

Trophies and awards will be presented to all finalists and $3,000 in prize money will be distributed to various adult champions.

A triathlon that includes a 500-yard swim, 20-K bike ride and 4-K run will be held Aug. 8 at Bonelli Park in San Dimas.

The event includes awards for the top five individual finishers in 24 divisions, including a Clydesdale division for competitors weighing 200 or more pounds. There is also a relay division.

A men’s senior tennis tournament sponsored by the Rotary Club of Industry Hills will be held Aug. 8, 9, 15 and 16.

Players 30 years and older are eligible to compete in singles and doubles divisions with $2,000 available in prize money.

A double-elimination three-on-three basketball tournament will be held Aug. 22 in front of Pasadena City Hall.

The event, co-sponsored by the Pasadena Junior Chamber of Commerce and Kaiser Permanente, features a format that pairs players based on age, skill and experience.

The event also includes a clinic sponsored by the Clippers and free throw, three-point and slam dunk contests.
