Youth Tournament Set for Two Weekends

More than 200 teams and 4,000 players will compete in the 12th annual San Diego Surf Cup youth soccer tournament the next two weekends at the Rancho Santa Fe Polo Grounds in Del Mar.

Boys and girls teams, ranging from the under-10 to the under-14 age divisions, will play today, Saturday and Sunday. The tournament for under-15 through under-19 divisions is next weekend, Aug. 7-9.

This is the first year the San Diego Surf Cup (previously known as the San Dieguito Surf Cup) will be at the Rancho Santa Fe Polo Grounds, which has marked off 14 fields for the occasion. In addition, the Rancho Santa Fe Polo Club will sponsor a polo match for all participants and spectators on Sunday and Aug. 9. Both matches will begin about 3 p.m., after the soccer tournament finals.

GOLF

Poway’s Bill Lunde was defeated in the first round of match play Thursday at the U.S. Junior Amateur Championships in Milton, Mass.

Billy West of Fayetteville, N.C., defeated Lunde, 2 and 1, on the par-71, 6,693-yard Wollaston Club course. Both had advanced after shooting 158 in the two rounds of stroke play. Later Thursday, West lost to Stephen Swartz of Camp Hill, Pa., 4 and 3, in the second round.

Tiger Woods of Cypress is the defending champion, and he won twice to advance to today’s third round.

MOTOR SPORTS

California Racing Assn. sprint cars will make their first appearance at Cajon Speedway in two years Saturday night.

The lineup, featuring a 30-lap main event, will include Davey Hamilton of Boise, Idaho, behind the wheel of Morales Brother Tamale Wagon, the CRA’s all-time winningest machine.

The first race is 7:15 p.m. Qualifying runs start at 6 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at Ticketmaster locations.
