Conference Honors 7 Loyola Athletes

Seven Loyola Marymount athletes have been named to West Coast Conference all-academic teams for the 1991-92 school year.

Those honored were Greg Walker of the men’s basketball team, Anthony Napolitano and Paul Ritchie of the baseball team, Regina Eroen of the women’s cross-country team, Luan Phan of the men’s tennis team, and Lara Labetich and Alane Soares of the women’s tennis team.

A total of 96 athletes in 10 sports were chosen to the all-academic teams by WCC Commissioner Michael Gilleran. Selection was based on a minimum 3.2 grade-point average and significant contributions made in athletics.

Elden Campbell of the Lakers will conduct a basketball camp for boys and girls ages 7 through 18 starting Monday at Morningside High.

The second Elden Campbell Basketball Camp runs daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Aug. 7 and will include instruction by Campbell and another former Morningside standout, Byron Scott of the Lakers.

Morningside boys’ basketball Coach Carl Franklin and Ron Randle, a former coach at Morningside and Hawthorne High, will also serve as instructors.

The fee is $75 per player and includes trophies, T-shirts and basketball shoes. There will be contests in free-throw shooting, three-point shooting and dunking. Information: Thomas Robinson at (310) 679-6052 or Randle at (213) 753-1525.

Eight members of the Rancho Palos Verdes/Marathom’s track and field team are competing in the Junior Olympics national championships through Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.

Five team members either attend or recently graduated from South Bay schools. Alex Dederer of Miraleste Intermediate will run in the 1,500 and 3,000 meters, Justin Bell of American Martyrs in Manhattan Beach and Karissa Le Blanc of Bishop Montgomery High competed in the long jump, and Brian Steip and Goss Lindsay of Peninsula High will run in the 4x800 relay.

More than 6,000 athletes from every state are competing for national titles in five boys’ and five girls’ age groups.

Butch Bucher, a part-time designated hitter for the Loyola Marymount baseball team last season, made his first start as a pitcher Sunday night in an Orange County Baseball Assn. semipro game and threw a no-hitter.

Bucher pitched his team to a 4-1 victory at Boysen Field in Anaheim, striking out seven and giving up his only run in the last inning on a walk, an error and a sacrifice fly.

Bucher is the regular first baseman and leads his semipro team in runs batted in. He had only pitched in relief before Sunday. He started 11 games for Loyola last season as a freshman, batting .278 and with 11 runs batted in.

The Manhattan Beach Recreation Department will hold the Junior Manhattan Open volleyball tournament Aug. 8-9 at the Manhattan Beach Pier courts. Boys and girls in high school or younger are eligible to participate in the event, which will begin at 8:30 a.m. each day.

Competition will be in three categories: 12th grade and under, 10th grade and under and eight grade and under. The entry fee is $14 for each two-person team.

The Torrance Parks and Recreation Department will present the 37th annual Aquacade at the Benstead Plunge, 3331 Torrance Blvd, Aug. 14-15 at 8 p.m.

Directed and choreographed by Mary Leite and Lynne Whately, 60 synchronized swimmers between the ages of 7 and 18 will perform swimming routines to the theme, “A Tribute to the Red, White and Blue.”

Admission is $3 for adults and $1 for children under 12 and senior citizens 55 and over. Information: (310) 618-2930.

Dodger players will conduct a youth baseball clinic Aug. 15 at Wilson Park in Torrance. Sponsored by the Torrance Parks and Recreation Dept., “Dodger Day” will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is free for youngsters of all ages.

The event will include an autograph session by Dodger players, and Dodger tickets, calendars and stickers will be given away. Information: (310) 618-2930.
