Steinberg Struggles to 4th in Pacific Coast Golf Event

Craig Steinberg of Van Nuys shot a final-round, four-over-par 75 on Friday to finish fourth in the 26th Pacific Coast amateur golf championship at Kapalua, Hawaii.

Steinberg entered the final round in third place with an even-par 213. He finished with a 72-hole total of 288.

Todd Fischer of Pleasanton won with a seven-under-par total of 277. He was never challenged after a record-equaling, eight-under-par 63 in the first round. David Lebeck of Portland, Ore., finished second, 10 strokes behind Fischer.

Mitch Voges of Simi Valley shot a 77 in the final round for a 19-over-par total of 303, two shots ahead of Woodland Hills’ Tony Bordwell, who shot a final-round 78. Michael Turner of Sherman Oaks, meanwhile, closed with an 80 for a tournament total of 310.

Scott Drootin will join Rick Nathanson as co-coaches of the Calabasas High baseball program.

Drootin, 38, joined the program two years ago and led the freshman team to the Marmonte League championship. In 1992, he served as Nathanson’s assistant, helping Calabasas to a 9-11 record.

Drootin previously worked as an assistant at Alemany (‘84) and Kennedy (‘85-86), helping the Golden Cougars to the City Section 4-A Division championship in ’85. He also coached a youth team that included current professional players Jeff Cirillo, Damon Buford, Joe Rosselli and Scott Sharts.

Roscoe Tanner, the tennis director at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, will face Vijay Amritraj in a first-round match of the Pacific Southwest Invitational senior tennis tournament today at the Los Angeles Tennis Center at UCLA.

One of the hardest servers in tennis history, Tanner won the 1977 Australian Open and reached the final at Wimbledon in 1979, losing to Bjorn Borg. Amritraj won 16 professional singles titles and 13 doubles championships during a 17-year professional career.

The Amritraj-Tanner match will follow a 1 p.m. match between Sandy Mayer and Bob Lutz.

The Fast Break Adult Basketball League has opened registration for the fall season, which starts the week of Sept. 20.

The league offers play at several levels, including open 6-feet-4-and-under, 6-feet-and-under and in A, B, C and D classes.
