One driver was killed Monday and two others were injured after a car struck the center divider on the San Diego Freeway and overturned several times, the California Highway Patrol reported.

James Fuller, 71, of Villa Park was pronounced dead at UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he was taken after the 11:36 a.m. accident, which backed up northbound traffic for about five miles.

The CHP said Fuller suffered chest and head injuries.

Two other drivers, Tamara Watkins, 19, of Garden Grove and Alicia Adams, 33, of Vista, were treated and released at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital and Medical Center, hospital officials said.

Fuller was driving north near Brookhurst Street when he was cut off by another driver, witnesses told the CHP. Apparently trying to avoid a collision, Fuller jammed on the brakes and lost control of his vehicle, the CHP said.

Fuller veered into the center divider, striking a car driven by Watkins. Watkins’ car then hit a car driven by Adams, the CHP said.

Fuller’s vehicle flipped over several times, the CHP said.

Investigators have not identified the driver who cut Fuller off, said CHP Sgt. Don Hulen.

No one was cited in the accident, Hulen said.
