Tiger Woods of Cypress shot a five-under-par 65 to take a four-shot lead in the first round of the American Junior Golf Assn. championship in Irvine, Tex. Ben Garner of Lake Forest shot 73 and his brother Joe shot 76.

Peter Hodson of England won the 46th stage of the Runner’s World Trans America Footrace, running 53.3 miles from Decatur, Ill., to Newman, Ill., in 8 hours 45 minutes 30 seconds. David Warady of Huntington Beach was sixth for the day but has an overall lead of 10:31:46 in the 64-day event that finishes in New York City.

Seana Hogan of San Jose won the women’s division of Race Across America in 11 days 15 hours 7 minutes when she arrived in Savannah, Ga., at 3:42 a.m. Tuesday.
