The Orange Crush baseball team, representing California at the Continental Amateur Baseball Assn. World Series for boys 13-14, won its third consecutive game in its pool by scoring a 15-7 victory over the host team, Ohio, in Dublin. The team includes 10 San Diego area players.

Poway’s Chip Lyles had a hit and three RBIs, and in three innings of relief, he allowed just two hits and struck out six. Colton’s Shawn Campa had two hits, four RBIs and a two-run homer.

The San Diego Sox dropped an 8-1 decision to San Antonio, Texas, and settled for a bronze medal at the AAU/USA Junior Olympics in Rochester, Minn.

Three San Diego players were named to the all-tournament team, Carlsbad’s Troy Glaus, Mira Mesa’s Chris Lilly, and Castle Park’s Alex Lontayo.

Undefeated Cleveland won the gold and San Antonio the silver.

GOLF

Todd Demsey, 20, a Torrey Pines graduate and a junior at Arizona State, was beaten in the quarterfinal round of match play at the 90th Western Amateur golf tournament on the 6,884-yard, par-71 Point O’Woods Golf and Country Club course in Benton Harbor, Mich.

Demsey was defeated 2 and 1 by Richard Green. Demsey had won his first round match over Jamie Taylor, 2 and 1.

Demsey was the leader of the tournament after three rounds before falling to fifth place through four rounds.

TRACK AND FIELD

San Diego’s Lydell Burston finished second in the youth boys’ 100-meter dash at the AAU/USA Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships in Rochester, Minn.

Burston clocked 11.49 seconds, finishing behind the 11.45 of Kemper Henderson from Wichita, Kan.

The other major San Diego performer was Christopher Staton, who took fourth in the bantam boys’ 100 with a 13.88 showing. The winner was Daymeond Hord of Jefferson City, Md., in 13.62.

TENNIS

Taryn Burgk of Del Mar, a junior at Torrey Pines and the tournament’s 11th seed, defeated Jonathan Pastel of Old Lyme, Conn., 7-6, 6-1, in a first-round match at the U.S. Tennis Assn. Boys’ 16 National Championship at Kalamazoo, Mich.

La Jolla’s Jonathan Gilula was eliminated by Robert Sproul of Harpersville, Ala. 3-6, 6-4, 6-0.

Ross Lowell of Oceanside and David Roditi of San Clemente defeated David Oosterbaan of Kalamazoo and Roy Sehgal of Foster City, Calif., in a second-round boys’ 18 doubles match, 6-3, 6-4. San Diego’s James Conda and La Jolla’s Jonathan Elsberry also teamed to win a pair of doubles matches.
