Cypress Takes First in Yearbook Contest

The 12-member yearbook staff of Cypress High School won first place in a recent competition at the South Coast Yearbook Seminar at UC Santa Barbara.

Cypress competed against 50 schools that were judged on theme, cover design and overall design.

Cypress yearbook staff members are Shawn Archuleta, Dani Frattaroli, Kim Hippler, Yuewen Kao, Nicole Kendzierski, Caroline Kim, Allyssa Lee, Karen Lin, Robby Longobardy, Jason Lorber, Brent Tsuda and Beth Zelkovitz.

Advisers are Judy Grady and Craig Herrick.

Antonio Marquez, a June graduate of Santa Ana High School, was awarded a $4,000 Home Savings of America Career Awareness Program scholarship, which also provides a 15-week course that teaches work readiness and basic consumer economics skills.

Marquez maintained a 3.23 grade-point average and will use his scholarship funds at UC Irvine, where he will major in biology.

Laguna Beach resident Donald Chou has been appointed chairman of the board of the Orange County Chapter of the American Heart Assn. Other board officers are Dr. Douglas Lyle, Lake Forest; Michele Mitchell, Santa Ana; Wayne J. Plizga, Irvine; Nadine Wilck and Alyce Peterson, Corona del Mar; J. Steven Roush, Newport Beach, and Jeffrey L. Kaylor, Costa Mesa.

Nhon-Kiet Nguyen, of Santa Ana was awarded a $1,000 scholarship by the Baxter Foundation. More than 500 students, all children of a parent who is employed by the firm, applied for the scholarship. The award is renewable if Nguyen maintains at least a 3.0 GPA.

Patricia A. Krone, a Newport Beach resident who is a retired executive of Pacific Bell, has been named chairwoman of the Orange Coast College Foundation, a fund-raising arm of the school. Krone, an OCC graduate, was inducted into the college’s Alumni Hall of Fame in 1988.

Barbara deBoon, director of operations of the Newport Harbor Area Chamber of Commerce, recently completed a weeklong program of study at the Institute for Organization Management at Stanford University.

John C. Crean, a 30-year member of the Exchange Club of Newport Beach, has been awarded the 1992 National Exchange Club American Enterprise Award, given annually to an entrepreneur who best exemplifies the spirit of the free enterprise system.

Crean is founder of Fleetwood Enterprises Inc., manufacturer of motor homes in 17 states and Canada. He is also involved in Big Brother/Big Sisters of Orange County, the Performing Arts Center and numerous other charities.

Crean received the award at the national convention of Exchange Clubs in Atlanta.

Scott Trujillo of Irvine and Thomas D. Fountain of Yorba Linda received their Boy Scout Eagle Rank at a Court of Honor held at churches in their respective communities.

Trujillo, 14, who will be a freshman at Irvine High School, completed a tree-planting project at El Camino Real School as his community project.

Fountain, a junior at Esperanza High School, helped refurbish buildings at the Good Shepherd Moravian Church as his community project. He has also compiled 375 hours of community service.

Huntington Beach resident Jennifer Lawson has been named the 1992-93 Associated Students president at Golden West College and will serve as the elected voice for more than 15,000 students enrolled each semester.

Lawson’s presidential term will run through May with five other officers.
