The University of Miami has dropped its men’s golf program, but will retain the sport for women, Athletic Director Dave Maggard said.
Maggard cited budgetary considerations and the effects of Title IX, which bars gender discrimination at schools that receive federal money, as the main factors leading to the decision.
“The (men’s) golf program cost us roughly $250,000 a year,” he said. “We will redistribute those funds partially to satisfy commitments we made to women’s athletics and other programs, and partially to provide a savings to enable us to financially meet our bottom line.”
