Leone, Cartwright Win in Bodysurfing
Grant Leone of Oceanside and Virginia Cartwright of Encinitas captured grand championships at the World Bodysurfing Championships at Oceanside Pier Sunday, winning their age-group heats then beating all other champions in one super heat at the end of the day. Leone also won the men’s 35-44 division, while Cartwright won the women’s 30-over division.
SAILING
Dennis Conner won the $40,000-British Yachting Grand Prix despite finishing last in the final race at Inverkip, Scotland. Conner, skippering the Formula One yacht Stars & Stripes, finished with 9.5 points in three days, while Sunday’s winner, Britain’s Harold Cudmore, who skippered Clyde 2000, had 9.25 points.
Peter Peckham of San Diego Yacht Club skippered Confusion to his third title in the 60-year-old Pacific Class National Championships, a race of 45-60-year-old wooden sloops on San Diego Bay.
