LOCAL NOTES : Warady Leads With One Stage to Go in Footrace

David Warady of Huntington Beach enters today’s final stage of the Runner’s World Trans America Footrace with a 5-hour 4-minute 33-second lead over Milan Milanovich of Switzerland.

Warady was 10th in Friday’s stage, completing the 49.2 miles from Washington to South Orange, N.J., in 10:30:29. Milanovich was fourth in 7:53:03. Emile Laharrague was the winner in 7:14:19.

The race, which began June 20, concludes with a 30-mile stage from South Orange to New York City’s Central Park.

David Lappin has been named Loara baseball coach, Athletic Director Marty Johnson said Friday. Lappin replaces Brian Batesole, who resigned after last season.

A 1983 graduate of Loara, Lappin was the school’s athlete of the year and went on to play baseball at California.

Bruce Petillo, a 1989 graduate of El Dorado High, has signed as a free agent with the Philadelphia Phillies, said his father, Bruce Petillo Sr.

The younger Petillo played catcher for Pepperdine in 1990, hitting .360. He will attend spring training and then will be assigned.

Scott Geoffrion of Huntington Beach and Cory McClenathan of Anaheim each set track records Friday during qualifying for the $834,550 National Hot Rod Assn. Champion Auto Stores Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway in Brainerd, Minn.

Geoffrion, driving a Dodge Daytona, raced a quarter-mile in 7.215 seconds in the pro stock division.

McClenathan was timed in 4.884 seconds in the top fuel division.

Bob May of La Habra shot par 72 and Mike Miles of Huntington Beach shot a 74 Friday in the opening round of the Ben Hogan Tulsa Open. Three players are tied for the lead at 68 in the tournament, which ends Sunday.
